Do you suffer from insomnia, fatigue, abnormal amounts of body odor, stress, indigestion, irritability, weight gain, bloating, lethargy, mental fog or depression?  While any of those ailments can result from a variety of reasons, they may also suggest that you need to detox your body.

“Most people are toxic and don’t even realize it,” noted Jessica Smith, Spa Director at Spa Shiki at the Lodge of Four Seasons at Lake Ozark, Missouri. “Much of that toxicity comes from the foods we eat, the air we breathe, sitting at a desk all day and too much stress in our daily lives.”

One of the first things you can do to begin the detoxification process in your body is to eliminate certain foods you eat, such as coffee, fried foods, and refined sugars.  Additionally, there are the myriad of chemicals to which we subject our bodies on a daily basis, especially women.

“Women can put on up to 1,000 different chemicals on their skin – the largest organ – before they even leave the house, from hair products to make-up, deodorant and lotions,” noted Smith, who cautions that if you cannot even pronounce an ingredient on a product, it’s best to shy away from it.

Aside from adjusting your diet and eliminating certain products you regularly use, there are numerous methods to aid in detoxification, some of which you can do at home and others you can enjoy at a spa, such as Spa Shiki. Among such methods include massage, the use of infrared saunas, facials, body treatments and wraps, hydrotherapy and light therapy, yoga, meditation and swimming.

“Anytime you allow your body to go into a relaxed state of healing helps with detoxification,” said Smith.

Body brushing is also an effective means of detoxification and can easily be done at home.

“Using a body brush, you should start brushing upwards from the feet and go towards the heart,” said Smith.

Smith emphasized the importance of ingesting enough minerals to keep the body healthy.

“Mineral deficiency is one of the primary reasons for illness and disease,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of consuming enough minerals to keep the body healthy, further recommending the use of raw (food-based) multivitamins, which can typically be found at health stores.

As you begin to detox your body, you may notice an increase in energy, weight loss, a stronger immune system, improved skin, clearer thinking, fresher breath, anti-aging benefits, and an overall improved sense of well-being.  When you detox, you simply feel good, and when you feel good, good things tend to happen.
