How it all started

Jim and Susan Haas are as successful in business as they are in love, now married for 32 years. With a blended family that includes nine grandchildren, they take every moment of life to celebrate together and keep things fun. It started with a fateful trip by Susan when she decided to visit her sister in Hayes, Kansas. They went to the local Country & Western bar where she met the love of her life. “Jim asked me if I wanted to dance and told me he was getting ready to ship out overseas to the Desert Storm conflict the next day for four months.” The attraction was immediate as Jim said he would write to Susan every day, which he certainly did! When he returned four months later, he asked her to marry him.

A match made in heaven, Jim worked as a builder in the past and Susan specialized as a wall-paper hanger and painter. Together they decided to buy a carpet store in Manhattan, Kansas around 2002. “We toured the old Shaw Carpet Mill warehouse to learn more about the carpet business and get more of a handle on what we needed to do to run a successful carpet business,” she explained. To expand, they incorporated selling awnings and shades from the store. She went on to say, “We signed the lease there for 5 years then moved to Kansas City in 2007. The first thing we did was get a booth at the Home and Outdoor Show and displayed our awnings and shades.”

This was only the beginning; they went on to do 40+ Home Shows together and their business took off. In 2006 Awnings by Haas was born.
