AskSAMIE, a Kansas City-based company specializing in aging-in-place solutions, has joined forces with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) to raise awareness about the critical role adult vaccinations play in healthy aging. The collaboration seeks to empower Kansans to age gracefully within their communities, maintaining independence and well-being.
Aging in place, the ability for individuals to remain in their homes and communities as they age, is a priority for many seniors. This concept emphasizes autonomy and quality of life, enabling individuals to maintain social connections, routines, and a sense of control. Achieving successful aging in place often involves home modifications, access to supportive services, and most importantly, proactive health care practices.
Adult vaccinations are a key part of preventative care. They help to prevent serious illness and problems that could make it harder for someone to age in place. AskSAMIE, in partnership with KDHE, aims to highlight the importance of vaccinations against preventable diseases like COVID-19, shingles, and influenza. These vaccinations not only protect individuals from serious illness but also help avoid hospitalizations and potential complications that can impact mobility, cognition, and strength.

The CDC recommends getting updated COVID-19 and flu shots every year during flu season. This can greatly reduce the chance of getting the virus and make symptoms far less severe if you do get the virus. Similarly, the shingles vaccine offers crucial protection against painful outbreaks and potential complications like eye damage or hearing loss. By minimizing the risk of these diseases, individuals can maintain their health and independence, increasing their chances of successful aging in place.
This initiative recognizes the significant impact preventative health care has on an individual’s ability to age comfortably in their chosen environment. Preventing illnesses and their potential complications through vaccination is crucial for maintaining the strength, mobility, and cognitive function necessary for independent living. AskSAMIE and KDHE are working together to share important information about adult vaccination. This helps Kansans make smart choices about their health now to impact longevity for the future.
